One of the best things about living in Maine has to be the water– I love running along the beaches, and jumping into the wide blue ocean. I’m especially thankful to do that in a state where we experience such long, silent, cold winters.  Each wintery day, I find myself waiting.  Waiting for the days when there will be the sounds of splashing, the clear water as far as you can see, warm winds and sunshine.  Is there anything that makes anyone feel more grateful, more fulfilled, and quite as lucky?  The only thing that comes to mind is being able to enjoy that bliss with our dogs at our sides!  Dogs are restricted from most of Maine’s beaches during summer months, or confined to leashes–  which, though understandable, must feel to them like more of a punishment than a privilege.  Beaches that do allow dogs off leash are not great or only allot a teeny tiny part of the beach, where owners spend more time trying to keep them contained in the part they’re allowed to be in, than they do having fun.  In the spring and fall, it’s too chilly to enjoy a good swim with them… it’s just not the same.  If Fetch landed $4 million, the best thing to do would be to take over a big stretch of beach on the water– “Dog Lover’s Beach.”  No leashes allowed.  Any visitor not prepared to leave covered in mud and dog hair should drive on.  We would spend the day swimming, balls would sail through the air, sounds of laughter and joyful barking, running through the sand, wagging tails… no need to be careful about who the dogs meet, no fretting about keeping them at our sides.  This is my $4 million fantasy– because really in all the things I dream of doing, my dog is always with me.
