Anyone need ANOTHER reason not to buy cheap brands of pet treats/foods?

Just read the most recent FDA recalls re peanut butter and pet food. The only places I think you’d find these brands would be superdiscounters or stores like Wal-Mart, or sorry folks, Petsmart. You can check the list of recalled pet foods on FDA’s site (there’s no kibble, just chews and biscuits). Here’s a link too for the FDA website on FAQs for the consumer. They emphasize that, as I’ve said before, pets rarely get salmonella, but I’ll add that we need to act ‘as if’, i.e. don’t panic but just throw the stuff away, and be very careful handling any recalled food, because you are far more prone than they are to get sick. I also like that you can search the site for recalled products by brand and by UPC. Not very comforting to read that Canada refused a shipment from the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) due to metal fragments in the peanuts…brings to mind a blog post by the NYT, ‘Do We Need a Dept. of Food?’
