Portland’s Diverse Businesses

If you are on this site, you probably already know about Portland Buy Local.  Did you know you can log on and identify locally-owned, independent businesses?  Christmas shopping is so much more fun when you’re in the Old Port v. the Mall, or in any neighborhood of Portland v. the Mall.  You can feel good about supporting your local economy as your dollars stay right here in Maine.  And you keep the diverse shopping culture of Portland alive.  Isn’t Portland’s unique character one of the big reasons we live here?

I thought I’d mention two businesses I visited last night:  Rabelais Books and Hugo’s Restaurant, right next to each other on Middle Street near Franklin Arterial.  Rabelais has an unbelievable collection of food/wine/garden books…special presents for food lovers of all kinds.  Last night was Hugo’s open house for their new a al carte and bar menu…wow.   Both businesses are big supporters of small local agriculture and livestock farms, good for our economy, good for the environment, better for the animals involved on the farms, and better for our health.
